Break In
âI just received a gram from Uncle Jonathan. He wants permission to bring Jimmy Hanâs magic mirror to Singapore?â
âTell him yes. Be sure to let him know where weâre staying in Auckland if he needs to call us. Mrs. Dupree is expecting us by tomorrow. How did you get into my room?â Sue Lee shouted from the shower.
âWe share the same terrace. Your door was open again. You got to be more careful, girl. Your gun is also sitting on your bedside table, Major. Didnât they teach you anything in the American army?â
âNow, wait a minute. I locked both doors before going into my bath, but now the balcony door was open?â Sue Lee said, standing in the doorway with a robe on. âWhat the hell? Letâs check the terrace.â
She lowered her voice. âDid you see anybody on the balcony next to ours?â Jane shook her head no while pulling her gun from her purse. Sue Lee picked up her revolver, checking the cylinder to make sure it was loaded. âLetâs take a gander outside.â
The two moved together like one, using experience to guide them. Jane turned the lamp off before pushing the curtain slightly open with her gun, showing the way was clear. Sue Lee stepped out onto the terrace, moving to one side with her back to the wall, holding her revolver in a ready position while Jane moved to the other side of the outside doorway.
They waited quietly in the dark, listening to the night sounds of the garden below.
They both had chosen this side of the hotel because of the courtyard with all the shrubs and flowers, not knowing it could conceal a break-in.
A rustle of bushes below Janâs adjoining room alerted them. Someone was moving.
Jane was closer. As she peeked over the railing, she saw a person brushing leaves away while coming out of the bush. She gestured to Sue Lee, who moved forward to point her gun over the railing.
âOkay, you have two guns pointed at you. Runâyou will be shot; Or standstill. Your choice?â
âWait, wait, donât shoot. Iâm not moving,â the figure said, raising two hands in the air. The voice was that of a woman.
Sue Lee signaled to Jane to go downstairs since she wasnât dressed for company yet.
Sue Lee finished dressing in time to answer the knock at her door; Jane entered behind a woman limping, with leaves in her blond hair.
âSorry for my rudeness, Sue Lee; Iâm staying in the room next to you. I thought Iâd hop over to surprise you. Your door was locked. I used my picks. I needed the practice, but Jane interrupted me, so I jumped over the rail. Not as agile as I used to be.â
âHermione Guthrie, what in the world?â
âI know. Why would British intelligence put me out in the field? Jane, it was your uncle who suggested that I would be a good operative. Boy, that was a long time ago. I suppose theyâll pull me in after letting my quarry
